Modesty meets Exuberance.
Risk-taking meets Practicality.
Optimism meets Perfectionism.
Expansion meets Analysis.
On 1st August 2015 Jupiter packed its bags and departed from its party in Leo and arrived in modest Virgo. Why is this change of sign important and what can we expect while Jupiter, the planet of expansion, luck, risk-taking, further knowledge and optimism travels through Virgo?
Jupiter’s glyph is made up of a half-circle and a cross -
To get an understanding of any planet and sign combination we can look at key words for each and try putting them together.

It can be difficult to see how contrasting energies can blend and work together, especially as any list of traits includes not just its neutral or what could be called positive expression, but also an under or over expression. As astrologer Donna Cunningham says the “ESSENCE of each planet is basically neutral, but there are positive and negative EXPRESSIONS…negative expressions are frequently the positive carried to an extreme”.
From the list above we can see that there are some sharp contrasts between the sign and planets expressions that indicate Jupiter is not really at home in Virgo. Jupiter rules Sagittarius, a Fire sign, and can easily expand and express its gregarious nature there. When Jupiter is in an Earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), its idealism and enthusiasm is tempered. This can actually be beneficial as it can otherwise get carried away and go over-the top. So, positively, Earth can ground Jupiter and give it more structure and discernment, and limit any excess. Too much Jupiter is demonstrated by words beginning with over-; over-the-top, over-eating, over-enthusiastic, over-indulgence. Earth energies can steady Jupiter; risks and rewards are going to be studied and calculated beforehand rather than being impulsive or child-like.
Stephen Arroyo, in Exploring Jupiter says about Jupiter in Virgo;
“I personally find that it is far more common to see Jupiter elevating and expanding the critical, analytical, linguistic and intellectual faculties of Virgo than to witness Virgo dominating Jupiter”
Indeed, Jupiter is ruled by Mercury, the planet of the mind and communication, and writers often have strong influences in Virgo. This could be just the time we have been waiting for to get to grips with the detail and start that book we’ve been thinking of writing. Technical or reference books will be particularly favoured by the analytical energies as will checking and proof reading documents.
With Jupiter in Virgo, we are likely to be feeling much more grounded. Look back over the last year with Jupiter in Leo, and reflect on whether there was a tendency to go over-the-top in an area of your life. Were there plans that now seem a bit grandiose, too expensive, too blingy, too dramatic or attention seeking? Did you get a bit carried away with something? We might now have to have a reality check, scale things down a bit or redesign, but there is a lot more practicality at our disposal and the details can be fine-tuned with a critical eye for detail.
If we get caught in too much detail, however, we could become overly-critical or caught up in unnecessary pettiness. And this is the flip side of Jupiter, the over-the-top side that amplifies the energies around it. If it encounters the critical side of Virgo it can amplify it to over the-top pickiness and perfectionism, with strong criticism of the self or others. It can make things appear so big that paralysis ensues. A negative expression of Jupiter and Virgo combined can lead to overthinking, a spiral of analysis and criticism that loops endlessly in and around itself, which is surprising given that Virgo is an Earth sign.
These thoughts, however, are not grounded and can take on a compulsive quality, almost obsessional, as the mind gets used to its seeking and business. This is the time to scream STOP very loudly to ourselves! To break the cycle we can do a variety of things. Keeping our energies as grounded and authentic as possible is paramount (see links below). Learning to be in the moment, breathing techniques and meditation would all be very beneficial. Another way would be to utilise Jupiter’s wide panorama, it sees the bigger picture. So, we can imagine ourselves on the back of a beautiful bird that will climb on the currents and take us way above the ground. From here, when we look down, we can get a broader view and realise where the details are not necessary.
We can use this time to analyse where we are on our spiritual journey. One of the keys for Virgo is to be of positive service to others, so with Jupiter in this sign helping others is an important ingredient in our personal growth. We can be much more disciplined in our self-development, planning our route and being more discerning with our choices. If we are retraining or looking for new therapies to learn, we can hone in more accurately on what is for our highest good, to fulfil our Soul potential. We will need to periodically re-evaluate our goals, as we might spend too much time with our heads down, looking at the detail. It would be beneficial to plan in some stages where we stop and lift our heads and see the bigger picture and realign to our goals.
Jupiter is associated with trust and faith, both religious and inner. When in Virgo, we are much less likely to put our trust in outside circumstances or people, or to be carried away with a blind faith in anyone or anything. Virgo is a modest sign and can lack in confidence, so there could be a tendency to under-estimate ourselves and our worth. It is an energy of holding back rather than pushing ourselves forward in contrast to Jupiter who wants to expand. Instead of trusting to luck or the Universe, regular work and self-discipline, bringing accomplishments through that work will be where we put our trust. As the hard work pays off, our self-esteem and confidence gradually rises.
“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience”.
This is how Jupiter represents potential, our personal potential to grow and learn as a spiritual being and become a wiser Soul. Whenever I see Jupiter transits coming up for a client I always encourage them to follow up any opportunities that are presented. Put your name in the hat, you can always take it out again, a wise Irishman once said. This is how we create our own luck, by being aware, by following up on opportunities presented to us.
Jupiter spends approx. a year in each sign, taking roughly 12 years to go around the zodiac. This also gives us a 12 year cycle of Jupiter in our own lives. If you become aware of Jupiter being activated in your chart or, as now, it changes signs and you want a better understanding of how that can affect you, look back to what was going on for you 12 years ago and notice the echoes that are currently around you
